How can computers be trained to recognize bird species through sound? The BirdNET research project employs artificial intelligence and neural networks to train computers to identify over 3,000 of the most commonly found bird species worldwide. Users are able to record audio files using the microphone on their Android device and determine if BirdNET accurately identifies the potential bird species present in the recording. This interactive tool not only allows individuals to become familiar with the bird species in their vicinity but also contributes invaluable observations by submitting their recordings.
BirdNET is a collaborative endeavor between the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Chemnitz University of Technology.
